About the Sturmtiger
Germany’s “38cm RW61 auf Sturmmörser Tiger” is more commonly known as the Sturmtiger. Based on the chassis of the famous Tiger I, it was a self-propelled mortar designed by Alkett. The first prototype mounting a 38cm mortar was completed by October 20 1943, with 18 such vehicles eventually produced in late 1944. The weapon fired rocket-assisted projectiles out to a maximum range of 4600m, propelled by vents in the gun tube wall that exhausted the propellant gases forward. The Sturmtiger was used mostly in defense of the Fatherland rather than as an assault mortar as originally intended.
About this kit
Dragon has created a 1/72 scale plastic kit of the Sturmtiger that is bulging with extraordinary levels of detail. Perhaps one of the most eye-catching features is the characteristic zimmerit coating found on the hull of this Sturmmörser. Even though the texture is very fine in 1/72 scale, it has been replicated with the utmost accuracy and realism. Indeed, this is the first 1/72 Sturmtiger kit ever to possess pre-molded zimmerit. Slide molds and photo-etched parts are widely used to allow maximum detail, while the tracks are made from DS. The massive mortar barrel even elevates and depresses on this stunning model, one that possesses real firepower!
